The Race: First run in 1855, 6 years before the first running of the Melbourne Cup. The original distance was the classic 12 furlongs (approx. 2400m) until 1972 when it was thought that the race would be safer with an extra 100m between the start and the first turn. Derby Day is often the biggest attendance day of the Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival with four Group 1 races on the Saturday card ahead of the Melbourne Cup the following Tuesday.
Lead Up Form: AAMI Vase, Caulfield Guineas, Geelong Classic.
The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 2500m start is situated just before the first turn in front of the grandstand in the home straight. An inside barrier is a slight advantage. It is difficult to lead all the way due to the distance involved.
Associated Races: | Coolmore Classic | Lexus Stakes | VRC Oaks | Melbourne Cup |
