Spring Champion
The Race: Originally the Australasian Stakes, first run in 1971 and won by Gay Icarus, the name was changed in 1978 to Spring Champion Stakes. Kingston Town won this race in 1979 before winning the Cox Plate in the following 3 years. In 2013 the race was moved back to the second week following the Metropolitan & Epsom Hcp. A strong performance in the Spring Champion can indicate a good form line for the Victoria Derby at the beginning of Melbourne Cup week at Flemington.
Lead Up Form: Underwood, Naturalism, George Main.
The Track: Randwick is a large course with four sweeping turns. Generally fair, but tends to favour the on pace runners when the ground is rain affected. Most runners will have their chances when the rail is True and the going is Good, they will tend to avoid the ground near the inside rail when the ground is rain affected.
Associated Races:
Caulfield Cup | Cox Plate | Melbourne Cup.
