The Race: The Empire Rose Stakes is a race for fillies & mares at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day as one of four Group 1 races on Super Saturday at the beginning of Melbourne Cup week. First run as a listed race in 1988 and has been Group 1 from 2004 onwards has been known as the Honda Legend, Hong Kong Bank Stakes, Hardy Bros Classic, Nestle Peters and the Myer Classic. Runners can sometimes back up in the 1600m WFA Emirates Stakes on the following Saturday and winners often have success in other good races for mares, including the Tristarc Stakes.
The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight.
Support Races: Victoria Derby, Mackinnon Stakes, Lexus Stakes.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is situated at the back of the straight just before a turn, inside barriers are a slight advantage. The rail is usually in the True position for this meeting and most runners will have their chance in the home straight.
Associated Races: Mackinnon Stakes | Coolmore Classic | Lexus Stakes | VRC Oaks | Melbourne Cup |
