The Golden Eagle was launched in 2019 as part of a revamped Spring Carnival in Sydney, which now boasts the two richest races in the southern hemisphere – the other race being the 1200m Group 1 Everest. The Golden Eagle is the first feature race in Australia to be held exclusively for four-year-olds, run over 1500m at Rosehill Racecourse. It comprises the third leg of the Golden Slam at Rosehill, with a $5 million bonus offered to any horse that can win the Golden Slipper as a 2yo, the Golden Rose the following year and the Golden Eagle as a 4yo.
The timing of the race controversially puts it in direct competition with racing at Flemington on Derby Day - the first day of racing during Melbourne Cup week - a move which was not received positively by the VRC. The intention is to reinvigorate the appeal of horse racing for a new generation and establish Sydney as an integral part of Australia’s Spring Racing Carnival.
