The Race: First run in 1933 over 6 furlongs as the Doomben Newmarket, a Listed race until 1979 then given Group 1 status, run over 1350m from 1973 and switched from handicap to Weight for Age in 1997. Often won by horses who are usually known for their sprinting ability, the distance of the race was reduced to 1200m in 2017. This race is regarded as a good form indication for the Stradbroke Hcp.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1200m start is located on the course proper in the back straight. There is a very short straight run before the first turn, inside barriers have a big advantage.
Weight & Statistics: Look for established Weight For Age competitors but worth noting that younger horses with light weights also have a reasonable record.
