The Race: The Doncaster Mile dates back to the 1860’s and has been an 8 furlong (mile) Handicap from its inception, now one of the premier features of Autumn racing in Sydney during The Championships. Under handicap conditions over the mile, this race has seen some champion horses carrying top weight to victory but the majority of Doncaster winners have been lighter weighted 3 and 4 year olds.
Best Lead Up Form: George Ryder, Coolmore Classic, Ranvet, Queen Of The Turf, Chipping Norton, Canterbury Stakes.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is located in a chute off the back straight. Long run before the first turn but inside barriers have a slight advantage. They can race very wide in the home straight in search of the best going, but this can often leave an opening on the inside rail that can be taken advantage of with a smart ride. Rail is usually in the True position for the first week of racing at Randwick during The Championships, going is generally fair when the ground is Good but suits the on pace runners when rain affected.
