The Race: first run in 1881 and is usually on the 2nd Saturday in October one week before the Caulfield Cup. One of Australia’s iconic races, previously regularly contested by both sexes although the fillies now usually go for the Thousand Guineas which is now held on the same day during Caulfield's Spring Racing Carnival.
Lead Up Form/Stats: many runners will have come through the Guineas Prelude, other significant lead up races include the Stan Fox, George Main, and Stutt Stakes.
Track Bias: The 1600m start at Caulfield is at the beginning of the back straight giving all horses a chance to get ready for the first turn and another long straight run brings the field up to the final turn. The rail is normally in the true position and when then track is no worse than Soft Caulfield races fairly under these conditions, however statistics show that horses drawn inside barrier 8 have more wins than those drawn wide.
