The Race: first run in 1925 at Williamstown, moved to Moonee Valley & Flemington in the 1950s and then to Caulfield. Has grown in importance over the years and together with the Lightning Stakes heralds the start of the Autumn Racing Carnival in Melbourne. Has an interesting connection to the Melbourne Cup in that several Melbourne Cup winners (possibly coming off a break after their Spring victories) have picked this race up at the start of their Autumn campaigns.
Time: Track record for the 1400m at Caulfield is 1:21.20 (Exceed & Excel)
Track Bias, Barriers: The race starts in a short chute at the back of the track which leads straight into a corner. Rail position can have a bearing on how the track plays and inside barriers are an advantage in larger fields.
Weight & Statistics: Weight For Age conditions means this race can throw up winners from both ends of the weight scale. Winners have been stayers resuming after the Spring Carnival and young males and females starting their 3yr old preparation, always an interesting mix.
