History: First run in 1890, the Stradbroke is the richest race in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Race has produced some outstanding middle distance horses, including filly Dane Ripper who went on to win the Cox Plate in 1997. Other past champion winners include Rough Habit (1991 & '92) Never Undercharge (1993), All Our Mob (1994), Show a Heart (2002), Snipers Bullet (2007).
Lead Up Form: BRC Sprint, Kingsford-Smtih Cup, Luskin Star (Scone). A few horses have won back to back Stradbrokes including Lucky Ring (1949 & 1950), Rough Habit (1991 & 1992) & Black Piranha (2009 & 2010).
Support Races: Queensland Derby, Queensland Guineas, JJ Atkins.
Track Bias, Barriers: Begins in a short chute of the back straight. Straight run of 450m to the first turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage, more so when the rail is out. Tough race over 1350m but look for runners who are capable of running out a strong mile.
Weight, Statistics: majority of horses are handicapped to carry less than 56kg. The last top weight to win was Rough Habit in 1992. There are fewer fillies & mares to contest this race although they are often well suited with less weight than their male counterparts.
