History: Since it’s earliest days, this race has a strong connection with the Melbourne Cup. Initially run as a 2 mile race, the distance has ranged from 12 furlongs (2400m) to 13 furlongs (2600m) and since 2001 the distance has been 2400m. This race often provides a good form line for the Caulfield Cup a few weeks later and while runners from this often do compete in the Melbourne Cup there hasn’t been a horse to win the Metropolitan – Melbourne Cup double since the 1950’s.
Metropolitan Hcp Past Winners: Tim Whifler (Melbourne Cup 1867), Redcraze (Caulfield Cup & Cox Plate 1957), Arwon (2nd Caulfield Cup & Melbourne Cup 1978), Railings (Caulfield Cup 2005), Tawqeet (Caulfield Cup 2006).
Time: Track record for the Randwick 2400m is 2:26.36 (Spechenka)
Lead-Up Races: Kingston Town Stakes, Naturalism Stakes & Newcastle Cup.
Supporting Races: Epsom Handicap, Flight Stakes.
Track Bias, Barriers: Randwick is a large course with four sweeping turns. Generally fair, but tends to favour the on pace runners when the ground is rain affected. At this distance barrier draw is not particularly important, should be possible to make ground unless the ground is wet. Look for handicappers with a good record at this track, fast final sectional times can be a helpful guide.
Weight, Statistics: Run under handicap conditions, most winners have come from the lighter end of the weights carrying 55.5kg or less.
