The 2019 Memsie Stakes
The Race: First run in 1899 and run over 1400m since 1980, the Memsie has become a significant race as a lead up to the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, and in particular The Cox Plate. Phar Lap, Ajax, Rubiton, Sunline and So You Think went on to win the Plate in the same year, while Comic Court won the Melbourne Cup, Rising Fast won the Caulfield Cup & Cox Plate and Makybe Diva won the Cox Plate and her 3rd Melbourne Cup in 2005
Past Winners: Heroic (1925 & 1926), Phar Lap (1931), Ajax (1938, 1939 & 1940), Comic Court (1949 & 1950), Rising Fast (1954), Sunline (2000), Makybe Diva (2005), So You Think (2010).
Lead Up Form: The 1400m P B Lawrence Stakes can give an indication for this race as it’s run under similar conditions and this is regarded as a good form race for the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October. Has also seen several Melbourne Cup winners resuming their campaigns here in recent times.
Time: Track record for the 1400m at Caulfield is 1:21.20 (Exceed & Excel)
Track Bias, Barriers: The race starts in a short chute at the back of the track which leads straight into a corner. An inside draw can be an advantage particularly as the rail is usually out a long way for this meeting favouring those on pace.
Weight, Statistics: Can be won by a horse which has seen success in the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup in the previous spring. In recent times the winner has been resuming. Mares have a good record in the race, the majority of winners are aged 4 or 5.
