The P B Lawrence Stakes
The Race: Formerly the JJ Liston Stakes, renamed in 2011. This race began its life at Flemington before being moved to Sandown in 1985, run there until 2001 when moved to Caulfield. Often used as a pipe-opener for middle distance runners who are first up in the early part of their Spring Carnival campaign, winners or placegetters often go on to do well in races such as the Toorak Handicap, Memsie Stakes, Makybe Diva Stakes or The Myer Classic. Always a good betting race and valuable as a form guide for a number of feature races later in the season. While many runners will be entered into the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate & Melbourne Cup, it is rare for a runner from this race to go on to success in those races in the same year.
Time: Track record for the 1400m at Caulfield is 1:21.20 (Exceed & Excel)
Track Bias, Barriers: The race starts in a short chute at the back of the track which leads straight into a corner. An inside draw is usually an advantage at the 1400m start and as the rail is often placed out for this meeting it will favour the on pace runners.
