Race History: First run in 1955 over the Imperial measured distance of 5 furlongs then over 1000m from 1973. Some exceptional horses have won the race in recent years and we have seen several go on to race at Royal Ascot in the UK in June: Choisir, Takeover Target, Scenic Blast and the talented Miss Andretti. She left a sizzling 57.22 seconds track record at Moonee Valley (where the race was held due to Flemington refurb.) and later in the same year did the same at Ascot running a track record in the King’s Stand.
In 2011 the phenomenal undefeated mare Black Caviar streeted her opposition in the Lightning, her ninth consecutive win. In 2012 she won again for her 19th consecutive race in a time of 55.53. In 2013 the race was re-named the Black Caviar Lightning, the mare took her place in the race again and broke the course record winning her 23rd race from 23 starts. She ended her career undefeated in 25 starts.
Time: Record 1000m Flemington 55.42 Black Caviar (2013)
The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Most runners will have their chance, even when the rail is out.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 1000m start is in a chute at the beginning of the final straight and give all runners a chance because the run to the winning post is straight with no corners. Best ground is generally in the centre of the track but in large fields they can use both the inside and outside.
