The Race: First run in 1865 over a mile (8 furlongs, approx. 1600 metres) and won by Dundee. Gunsynd ‘The Goondiwindi Grey’ won the 1971 Epsom along with a handful of other group races and in the following year won the Cox Plate. Placed on the calendar a month before Melbourne Cup week at Flemington, runners in this will go on to race in many of the Melbourne features and can be a particularly good form indicator for the Cantala Stakes.
Supporting Races: Metropolitan Handicap, Flight Stakes.
The Track: The 1600m start is located in a chute off the back straight. Long run before the first turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage. They can race very wide in the home straight in search of the best going, but this can often leave an opening on the inside rail that can be taken advantage of with a smart ride.
Lead Up Form: George Main Stakes, Shannon Quality, Tramway, Theo Marks.
Weights & Statistics: run under handicap conditions this is historically a race where the winner often comes out of the bottom half of the field with only a few top weights to win.
Associated Races:
Metropolitan Handicap | George Main | Turnbull Stakes | Caulfield Cup | Cox Plate | Melbourne Cup.
