History: This race for 2yr olds was first run in 1971. Together with the lead up races (Blue Diamond Preview & Prelude), it brings together the cream of Australia’s sprinters ahead of the world’s richest race for 2 year old horses, the Golden Slipper. Only 4 horses have achieved the Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper Double and none since 1989. Bel Esprit in 2002, Midnight Fever 1987 and Rancher 1982 won all three legs of the Blue Diamond series.
In 2011 a bonus was introduced for any horse winning the 3 races, subject to minimum field size conditions.
Time: Track record Caulfield 1200m 1:07.74 (Miss Andretti)
Support Races: Futurity Stakes, Oakleigh Plate
Lead Up Races: The most common lead up race for this is the Blue Diamond Prelude but many winners have come from wins in the Talidert Stakes Other races of interest include the Inglis Classic & the Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic.
Track Bias, Barriers: There is usually little bias at Caulfield when the rail is in the True position, when the rail is out it becomes hard for the backmarkers to make up a lot of ground in the concluding stages. The long straight run from the start gives a chance to every horse to gain a good position early, but it is preferable to be in the leading division by the time they hit the home turn.
Weight & Statistics: Set Weight conditions a good quality filly will have every chance to win, as many have done in the past.
Golden Slipper | Magic Millions | Toorak Handicap | Thousand Guineas | Caulfield Cup | Cox Plate | Melbourne Cup.
